BLACKVILLE • A longtime political staffer who comes from a long line of public servants and political organizers will be carrying the Liberal Party banner in the upcoming Miramichi West provincial byelection.

Hannah Fulton Johnston, a Doaktown resident who was most recently chief of staff for the Government Members’ Office, was acclaimed as the Grit candidate before nearly 100 supporters and caucus members on Saturday at the Father A.A. McKinnon Memorial Hall in Blackville.

Premier Susan Holt hasn’t set the byelection date yet, but Fulton Johnston said she wanted to run because she grew up in a family that understood the value of service and helping to build a stronger community and a better province.

“I’ve spent my career in the public service at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels,” she said. “I know how government works and how to navigate it. I want to be able to help when people need it the most. Helping people is what I love to do.”
