Miramichi topples Lake City in overtime in Pro-Line Legacy Cup final showdown

FREDERICTON • For the first time in their two-year history, the Miramichi Hericanes are Maritime Women’s Basketball Association champions.
The Hericanes earned the 2025 Pro-Line Legacy Cup title with a 78-68 win over the Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth and Cole Harbour, N.S., in overtime on Sunday in the professional women’s hoops circuit’s gold-medal game at the Richard J. Currie Centre, on the University of New Brunswick campus in the province’s capital.
The Hericanes punched their ticket to their first league final appearance with a 77-68 triumph over the two-time defending champs, the Halifax Thunder, in the semifinals on Saturday. The 56ers advanced to the championship game with a 75-69 victory over the host Fredericton TRL Solutions Freeze in the other crossover.
The Thunder beat the Freeze 71-63 in Sunday’s third-place game.
Miramichi’s championship win marked the first time a New Brunswick squad earned the MWBA title. The previous two winners were the Thunder in 2023 and 2024 and the Halifax Hornets in 2022.
