MIRAMICHI - Part of an old school property in the former town of Chatham could soon be sold to a developer who plans to build dozens of housing units on the site.

At Tuesday’s council-in-committee meeting, city council discussed the pending sale of the 10,000-square-metre southern portion of the old Ian Baillie Primary School site, off Jones Street, to Chatham Non-Profit Housing Inc. for a 44-unit housing development.

Council will vote on the sale at a future meeting.

In a report presented to council, economic development and tourism director Jeff MacTavish said Chatham Non-Profit Housing was the only firm to respond to the city’s request for proposals for housing developments on the property, which was rezoned from institutional (IN) to mixed-use (MU) last year.

“Chatham Non-Profit Housing has submitted a price of $161,000, HST included, with a proposal to build one 38-unit apartment building and three duplexes for a total of 44 rental units,” he said in his report.

“The company plans to begin construction upon completing the property sale.”
