Renowned author added to Canada-wide literary trail
Plaque with excerpt from a David Adams Richards novel unveiled in his hometown

MIRAMICHI - An award-winning Miramichi author is now part of a nationwide literary trail, with plaques featuring an excerpt from one of his novels on display in his hometown.
Dozens of people attended a ceremony on Friday afternoon for Project Bookmark Canada to unveil the plaques recognizing David Adams Richards at the city’s new Harkins/Memorial Field Recreation Hub, in the former town of Newcastle.
The plaques are in both English and French and contain a brief biography of Richards, who was appointed to the Senate in 2017. They also include an excerpt from his 2006 novel, The Friends of Meager Fortune.
Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordon also presented Richards and his sister, provincial court judge Mary Jane Richards, with commemorative coins marking the city’s 30th anniversary. Richards and his sister read the book excerpts in English and French during the ceremony.
“This was a wonderful surprise,” Richards said after the event. “I had no idea that I was even being considered for this initiative.
“When Project Bookmark phoned me and said that the mayor had graciously signed off on this, I was very humbled, as anyone would and should be. It’s a wonderful honour. Today was a wonderful day.”
