RSC plans mobile hazardous waste service
Idea was previously studied by consultant in 2021, but the previous board nixed it

MIRAMICHI • The Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission could soon adopt a mobile hazardous waste collection model to replace the existing program of household hazardous waste disposal days throughout the region.
At one of its meetings last year, the RSC board of directors unanimously directed staff to seek funding for a mobile trailer towable by a quarter-tonne truck and tap into the commission’s capital reserve accounts to launch a mobile hazardous waste disposal program across Northumberland County starting in 2026.
Dillon Consulting first explored and studied the idea of a mobile service in 2021, but the previous RSC board didn’t pursue it due to concerns about the cost of expanding beyond the current service level.
In a report presented to the board, Mélanie Rousselle, the RSC’s general manager of eco-diversion services, said the idea was studied again to determine if it’s a feasible alternative to the existing household hazardous waste program. It currently includes two to five annual drop-off days for hazardous waste and e-waste each year in Miramichi, Doaktown, Renous, Sunny Corner, and Lagacéville.
“In 2022 and 2023, the RSC held five events in which the household hazardous waste program costs were $148,399 and $155,234, respectively,” she said in her report.
