Sports Notebook: Corcoran wins horseshoe award
Miramichier earns hardware at provincials; finishes on top of hometown league

WATERFORD • The Miramichi Horseshoe League was well represented at the 2024 Provincial Horseshoe Pitching Championships, held on Sept. 7 and 8.
Ron Corcoran was named this year’s elders provincial champion and recorded a high-ringer percentage of 49 per cent at the year-end tournament in Waterford.
Vera Menzies also was the women’s AB runner-up in the singles division, registering 142 points.
Corcoran led the men’s AB singles division with 224 points. He followed his strong provincial performance with a Miramichi league title win alongside Sharon Savoie. On Sept. 9, the duo capped off their 2024 season by finishing with 126 points over Bill Craig and Kerin Doyle’s 94.
Wayne Ryan and Pat Butler finished third with 92 points, followed by Ed Manuel and Jimmy Saunders with 68, Mick Arsenault and Chris Cortes with 66, Rene Savoie and Emery Perry with 62, Gerald Comeau and James Cortes with 38, and Vera Menzies and Janet Debeau with 28.
