Weekend house fire displaces two people
Deputy fire chief says a woman was hospitalized after blaze in Chatham Head

MIRAMICHI • Two people were displaced and one was taken to hospital as a result of a fire over the weekend that destroyed a house in the Chatham Head neighbourhood.
Miramichi Fire Department deputy chief Mario Berthiaume said firefighters were called to the blaze at a two-storey house on Bridge Road at around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday.
At first, Berthiaume said an elderly man and woman were reported to be trapped in the burning house. He said the man got out safely, but fire crews used a ladder to rescue the woman, who has since been hospitalized and is being treated for smoke inhalation.
“The last known location of the female occupant was on the second floor,” said Berthiaume.
“When our guys arrived on scene about five minutes after the call, we found a house that was heavily engulfed in smoke and fire, especially around the porch area.”
