Policies

The Northumberland Free Press’s contents are protected by copyright and may only be used for personal, non-commercial purposes.

The Free Press believes in the fundamental principles of freedom of expression and freedom of the press. We believe in searching for absolute truth through the open exchange of ideas and that publications have the right to communicate information without influence or fear of retribution from the state or other powerful entities or individuals.

The Free Press’s mission is to serve its readers by reporting local news as impartially and as accurately as possible. The Free Press is responsible for the fairness and reliability of its reporting and seeks to foster an online public forum as a gathering place for readers wishing to be informed by and engage with its content.

The Free Press adheres to the Canadian Press style guidelines outlined in the most recent editions of the organization’s Stylebook and Caps and Spelling Guide.

The Free Press maintains a politically neutral stance, allowing as many perspectives as possible on hot-button topics to be presented even-handed over a reasonable amount of time and fostering dialogue on partisan issues instead of participating in them. The Free Press will not endorse political candidates. Rather, when covering elections, the publication will invite candidates to present their ideas and/or platforms to inform voters in its coverage area(s) of their candidates’ positions and allow them to make educated decisions when selecting their representatives at the local, provincial, and federal levels.

The Free Press reserves the right to publish editorials championing causes it deems in its readers’ best interests. These pieces reflect the publication's opinion as an institution, not any individual reporter or columnist. Any readers’ submissions or columnists’ musings are the writer's opinion and do not necessarily speak for or represent the opinion of the Free Press.

The Free Press will try to attribute any opinions expressed in news headlines. The publication will make honest attempts to give the subjects of news stories a reasonable amount of time to respond to any stories containing accusations or criticisms.

The Free Press will work to avoid using cliches, loaded words, or editorializing in writing. The publication will not show stories to sources before publication. Fact-checking can and does occur, but that does not equate to conceding editorial content control to sources.

Quotations will be used to convey a source’s intended message. Changes to quotes will only be made to clarify a statement from a source. Any changes will be contained in square brackets ([ ]).

In the event of errors, corrections will be made as soon as possible after editorial staff are notified of the error. Corrections will not repeat the error but will state the error and cause and include the correct information. Corrections will be placed in italics in stories in an editor’s note. When extra information is required to explain a story to readers, an editor’s note will be italicized and placed at the top or bottom of a story at the editor’s discretion.

The Free Press does not use anonymous sources in any original work. Readers have a right to know who is speaking to them. Material should be attributed to its source whenever possible.

The Free Press reserves the right to include hyperlinks in its stories connecting readers with previously published Free Press stories or external sources that provide additional context. Readers who follow external links do so at their own risk. The Free Press assumes no responsibility for content published on other websites or applications.

These policies are subject to change as deemed necessary by Free Press management and as situations arise that require clarification under this section.
